1774 - New Regulating Act was introduced which abolished the East India Company Government and a new Government was formed.

1822 - 1st edition of London Sunday Times.

1906 -  Dr. Lee DeForest , one of the “fathers of radio,'' announced his three-element electrical vacuum tube (now known as a triode). He had discovered that when a mesh, or grid, of wire was placed between the filament and collector “plate” in a diode tube (first made by J. Ambrose Fleming, 1904), a large voltage-amplifying effect could be produced. DeForest patented this vacuum tube on 15 Jan 1907. The ability of this tube to amplify weak signals was an invention as great as radio itself, because it made long-distance communication possible.

1935 - Communist forces end their Long March at Yan'an, in Shaanxi, China, bringing Mao Zedong to prominence.

1956 - Dr. Hannes Lindemann began his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat (17 feet). Lindemann, a German physician on a U.S. Air Force base in Morocco. He wrote a book Alone at Sea, about his two journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. Battling thirst, hunger, mental disorientation, hallucinations, lack of sleep, and shark encounters, Lindemann successfully sailed alone across the Atlantic in 1956 in 76 days in aKlepper foldboat double seat Aerius to which he added an outrigger and mizzensail.

1962 - Chinese launched simultaneous offensives in Ladakh and across the McMahon Line.   (Chinese troops advanced over Indian forces in both theatres, capturing Rezang la in Chushul in the western theatre, as well as Tawang in the eastern theatre. The war ended when China declared a ceasefire on 20 November 1962, and simultaneously announced its withdrawal from the disputed area).

1983 - The fifth legal definition of the metre was the distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

1991 - 6.1-7.1 earthquake in Uttar Kashi, about 670 die.

1999 - The Centre accepts the recommendations of the Backward Classes Commission on the inclusion of Jats and other backward classes (OBCs) in Rajasthan except Bharatpur and Dholpur districts.

2011 - The former leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, and his son Moatassem Gaddafi are killed shortly after the battle of Sirte (2011) while in the custody of NTC fighters.

1956 - Lawrence Dale Bell, American aircraft designer and aircraft manufacturer, founder of Bell Aircraft Co, whose experimental X-1 rocket-propelled airplane in 1947 was the first to break the sound barrier in level flight.

You may have known....

On 12 June 1975, the Allahabad High Court invalidated the result in Gandhi's constituency (of 1971 elections) on the grounds of electoral malpractices. Instead of resigning, Indira Gandhi called a state of emergency, suspending democracy and outlawed political opposition.
