Food is the most important component for the well-being of human beings. According to the World
Health Organization report, 4.2 lakh people die annually and every 10th people become sick due to
contaminated food in the world. According to the Food Wastage Index Report, 2021 household food
wastage in India is 50 kg per person per year. Of course, this wastage is less than in many other
countries of the world. However, to stop any kind of wastage of food, and facilitate the availability of
safe food to the needy we have to take a pledge on the occasion of World Food Safety Day
celebrated on June 7.
India's first food security museum
The country's first food security museum has come up in Thanjavur city of Tamil Nadu which depicts
the story of India's food security from "Ship to Mouth" existence to becoming one of the largest food
grains exporting nations.
FSSAI has notified Food Safety and Standards (Surplus Food Receipt and Distribution), 2019 in which
the responsibilities of the food donors and distribution agency have been fixed so that the donated
food is safe for human consumption.
On the initiative of the Government of India, the United Nations has declared the year 2023 as the
International Year of Nutritious Cereals. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has developed
79 biofortified varieties of rice, wheat, maize, bajra, lentils, groundnut, linseed, mustard, and
soybean. 8 biofortified varieties of cauliflower, potato, sweet potato, yam, and pomegranate are
being popularized among farmers. Natural farming, promotion of nano urea and soil health card for
providing soil nutrients informations are among the several steps taken by Government.
