1877 - Louis-Paul Cailletet became the first to liquefy oxygen. Shortly after, he also was first to liquefy nitrogen, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and acetylene.

1942 - The first self-sustained nuclear chain reaction was demonstrated. At the University of Chicago, Enrico Fermi and his team achieved the world's first artificial nuclear chain reaction, in a makeshift lab underneath the University's football stands at Stagg Field. (Fifteen years later to the day, in 1957, the first full-scale atomic electric generating station in the U.S. began operation in Pennsylvania. The plant reached full power 21 days later, generating 60 megawatts).

1982 - Dr. William C. DeVries replaced the diseased heart of Barney Clark with the Jarvik-7, the first permanent artificial heart ever used for a human patient. This was the first of a series of five implants of the Jarvik total artificial heart during the next three years. The first patient, 61-year-old Barney Clark, survived for 112 days. Only four others received the Jarvik as a permanent replacement heart. The second, William Schroeder, lived 620 days.

1901 - King Camp Gillette begins selling safety razor blades.

1927 - 1st Model A Fords sold, for $385.

1984 - Following the Bhopal Gas disaster on the night of December 2, 1984, the ICMR initiated a series of interdisciplinary investigations on the health of the people with severe, moderate and mild exposure. A Coordinating Unit, which was later re-designated as the Bhopal Gas Disaster Research Centre was established early in 1985 at the Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, to monitor and coordinate the managerial and technical aspects of the various projects.

1999 - Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Indian opening batsman, announced his decision to retire from international and domestic cricket at a press meet in Chandigarh.

1855 - Narayan Ganesh Chandavarkar, one of the founders of Indian National Congress and social reformer.

1959 - Boman Irani, actor.

1960 - Silk Samitha, actor.

RIP....

1552 - Father Francis Xavier, Portuguese Jesuit priest. He started his mission by training and employing native clergy in conversion efforts. He spread Christianity to India, Malay Archipelago and Japan.
