New Delhi: Addressing the nation on New Year's Eve on the impact of demonetisation and the roadmap ahead for the economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India has gone through a massive cleansing process and purification drive (Shuddhi Yatra).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on today said India has gone through a massive cleansing process and purification drive (Shuddhi Yatra).
In a 43-minute-long address to the nation, he said the citizens of the country were desperate to break free of corruption, but had never been given a chance to do so earlier, and had in fact gotten used to the idea of offering extra money to get their jobs done.
Prime Minister Modi said India has set a new example for the world through this 50-day-long demonetisation exercise, adding that their commitment and discipline to tackle the cash crunch would be a living example for generations to come.
"This is the first instance in India's history when the government and the people have fought shoulder to shoulder. I got thousands of letters from the people who shared their pain, but they reaffirmed their resolve to stick with the process to root out corruption and black money," he said.
He further stated that "125 crore Indians have proved that they are willing to wait in line at banks, but do not wish to be even one step behind in the drive against corruption."
He said that what would me most surprising to a majority of the citizens would be that, "Just 24 lakh Indians had admitted to having an income of more than Rs.10 lakhs,", which was indicative of the very high level of tax evasion being perpetrated by those not abiding by the law.
Expressing confidence that the New Year would see lesser queues outside banks and things returning to normal, Prime Minister Modi said, "Banks have never before seen this sort of influx of cash", and he would like to see personnel of these institutions focusing on helping the middle class and the poor.
He said that the notes ban has seriously impacted black money and terror-financing.
PM Modi had last addressed the nation on November 8, when he suddenly abolished 500 and 1,000 rupee notes in a decision aimed at combating corruption and black or undeclared money.
The Prime Minister's move took out 86 per cent of the money in circulation and he had requested people to allow him 50 days to ease the cash crunch that followed, promising that the "short term pain" would be followed by long-term gain."
A deadline to exchange old notes at banks ended yesterday (Friday, December 30.)
As part of the demonetisation drive, how much money can be withdrawn from ATMs and banks will remain controlled for now. Starting tomorrow (January1), the daily limit on ATM withdrawals will go up to Rs. 4,500 rupees from Rs. 2,500, but the weekly cap on withdrawals from bank accounts stays capped at Rs. 24,000 rupees. The Reserve Bank of India has not indicated when the limits will be relaxed or removed.
The opposition united in attacking him for failing to anticipate how hard the notes ban would affect people, particularly in rural India where banks are tough to access.
While cash shortages have eased somewhat, bankers and analysts said the situation is far from normal and could last at least another six months. They said the move could hit economic growth and lead to job losses and a drop in demand for goods. The government has refuted these predictions.
New Delhi: Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa PVSM AVSM YSM VM ADC on Saturday took over as the 25th Chief of the Air Staff at a ceremony held at Air Headquarters (Vayu Bhawan).
Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa today took over as the 25th Chief of the Air Staff.
In his address to the IAF, Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa said, "I feel honoured and privileged to have been entrusted with the responsibility to lead one of the finest Air Forces in the world. Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa further said that IAF is on a trajectory of modernisation and is transforming into a strategic aerospace power with full-spectrum capability.
"Accretion through new acquisitions, replacement of obsolete equipment with state-of-the-art inductions and upgrade of the vintage weapon platforms would bolster our capabilities. Forthcoming inductions of the Rafale aircraft, Attack Heptrs, Heavy Lift Heptrs, Force Enhancers, SAGW and Air Defence Radars hold great promise for the future. Also, it has been a matter of great national pride, to usher in the first 'Tejas' squadron of the IAF," he said.
The Air Chief Marshal further said that the Airfield Infrastructure modernisation programme and upgradations in Communications Network have strengthened the support structure for effective operations.
"While undertaking its modernisation, the IAF has taken an active and sustained role in the "Make in India" plan, to take forward indigenous production of combat aircraft, helicopters, weapon sensors and systems, besides other aviation equipment. A vibrant and flourishing domestic capability would be an essential ingredient for the Nation to continue its glorious evolution," he added.
In his address, he also expressed his pride at the way India's image worldwide has been showcased through the IAF's strategic reach. · Hardship faced by citizens will be a shining example of how foundation for a bright future is laid. This is a historic example of how govt and citizens are together fighting for truth and virtue.
· What India has done is unprecedented in world history. Yes, lack of cash gives pain, but more cash is more painful.
· Only 24 lakh people in India have declared that that their income is more than 10 lakh per annum. Will anyone accept or digest this? See the large number of cars and bungalows. There are lakhs of such people in each city.
· The money that was outside the economic mainstream is back. Technology has helped.
· Terrorism, naxalism, Maoism, drug trade, human trafficking, etc that rely on black money have been attacked by this decision of demonetisation.
· Bank employees and authorities along with people have done exemplary work, yes there have been reports of a few indulging in corruption.
· Home loans for poor and middle class of upto Rs nine lakh to get four percent exemption on interest and those upto Rs 12 lakh to get three percent exemption under PM Awas Yojana. Also, on Rs. 20 lakh loan, two percent rebate will be given.

· For senior citizens - on up to 7.5 lakh Rs deposit, yearly eight percent interest will be there for 10 years.
· The BHIM app was started and I urge people to make use of it. Let all scholars evaluate these policies of ours.
· In 1917, there was Gandhi's Champaran Satyagraha. After 100 years too, there is value for honesty in India. Today there is no Gandhi but his path is relevant.
· We have youth, ability, resources. Let's all come together and develop India.

“When it shall be said in any country in the world,
my poor are happy;
neither ignorance nor distress is to be found among them;
my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars;
the aged are not in want, the taxes are not oppressive;
the rational world is my friend,
because I am a friend of its happiness:
When these things can be said,
then may the country boast
of its constitution and its government.”

Subject : Disbursement of salary in cash in the Storm (Vardha) affected area of Chennai – Representation of Bharatiya Pratiraksha Mazdoor Sangh (BPMS)
Defence Civilian Employees Federation BPMS has address letter ref. no. BPMS/MoD/Payment/186(8/1R) dated 27 Dec.2016 (copy enclosed) to the MoD, on the above subject. It has been informed that the storm Vardha has caused enormous damage in the Chennai Area. The disruption of the electricity supply has adversely affected the banking services, thereby causing economic hardship to the Central Government employees working in and around the affected area. It has been requested that the serving employees in the Chennai area may please be paid the salary for the month of Dec 2016 in cash.
In view of the position reported by BPMS, it is apprehended that the ATM systems and the computer network may not be functioning in the storm affected area, which may not be allowing the public to access the electronic banking facilities. It is felt that the hardship being experienced by the affected employees should be addressed with due sensitiveness. It is suggested that necessary instructions may please be issued to the pay disbursing authorities, located in the storm affected area, to explore the possibility of disbursing the salary for the month of Dec 2016 to the Government employees in cash, in accordance with the ceilings/instructions prescribed by the Government

Just read a book written by Lt Gen YN Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd). His last posting was as Army Commander Central Command.
Titled, 'Musings of a Military Maverick' the book is a marvel. Tightly written (121 pages), the author packs so much that is both interesting and educative. The General, having lost a leg in a mine explosion during the 1971 War, faced immense hurdles to rise in a highly competitive hierarchy. His successfully overcoming each obstacle through dignified stoicism and a steely resolve, comes out vividly as one wades through the narrative. The language is superb and the style is racy and readable. Not a very voracious reader myself, I simply could not put it down once started; read it in one sitting, keeping awake till 3 am.
Anita found it equally gripping, there being enough narration of Army family life. Mrs Despina Sharma, comes out as a pillar of strength for the General through many dark patches in his career. Their love for each other as they shunt from one military station to another was the main glue. Nothing is greater proof of her dedication than the fact that she left a UN job, her family and home to marry an Army captain in an unknown land. Her commitment and contribution to the military welfare activities is exemplary.
I will recommend the book to my military and civilian colleagues. It is available online at Amazon.in @ 160/- for e-book or soft cover copy @ Rs 350/-plus 50/-for postage. Alternatively, you can get an autographed copy from the Author @ Plot No 2, Bhanu Enclave, Yapral Road, Secunderabad (TS)- 500087 (email: email@example.com) @ Rs 350/-. It is well worth it.

New Delhi: Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, on Wednesday asserted that One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme of the government is reasonably good and said that one should accept it.
Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha
"The OROP by the government is reasonably good. We should accept it. The anomalies are being resolved by one-judge committee. Some of the anomalies and the discrepancies which cropped up from the transition from the sixth to seventh pay commission have been resolved... others will also be resolved," he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday accused the Congress Party of betraying the jawans by not fulfilling the long-pending OROP demand in the last 40 years.
Addressing a parivartan rally in Dehradun, Prime Minister Modi said, "My Army jawans were demanding OROP for the last 40 years, the party that ruled the country then never thought of their demands."
"In reality, the budget for OROP is over Rs. 10,000 crore. Why did they (Congress) betray the Jawans by allocating 500 crore for this," he added.
He said the Centre was always clear that from day one that the Jawans must get their due and therefore, his government always stated that OROP will be a reality.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar earlier last month said 95 percent of veterans have already got the benefits of the OROP scheme and they are happy with it.
The scheme, announced in September 2015, is meant to ensure equal pension to servicemen who retired on the same rank and after the same duration of service, regardless of the year of retirement.
However, retired soldiers have been alleging that the government has not addressed their concerns fully about disparity in pension payments.
