नवी दिल्ली/कराची : पाकिस्तानात अल्पसंख्यांक असणाऱ्या हिंदूंनी होळीनिमित्त आयोजित कार्यक्रमाला पंतप्रधान नवाझ शरीफ यांनी आवर्जून उपस्थिती लावली. एका युवतीने केलेल्या गायत्री मंत्राच्या गायनाला त्यांनी टाळ्या वाजवून दिली.

पाकिस्तानातील हिंदू समुदायाने होळीचा उत्सव मोठ्या उत्साहात साजरा केला. कराचीमध्ये शहरात विविध ठिकाणी कार्यक्रमांचे आयोजन करण्यात आले होते. नरोधा मालिनी या तरुणीने आपल्या सुरेल आवाजात गायत्री मंत्राचे पठण करीत उपस्थितांची मने जिंकली.
मुस्लिम स्त्रिया व पुरुषांनी तल्लीन होऊन ऐकत असल्याचे या व्हिडिओ क्लिपमध्ये दिसत आहे. शरीफ यांनी लक्ष देऊन तिचे गायन ऐकले आणि शेवटी टाळ्या वाजवून तिला दाद दिली.

शरीफ म्हणाले, "कोणताही संकोच न बाळगता कराचीच्या प्रत्येक भागात होळी साजरी करण्यात येत आहे हे पाहून मला आनंद होत आहे. पाकिस्तानात ठराविक धर्म स्वीकारण्यासाठी कोणीही इतरांना जबरदस्ती करू शकत नाही."

'हॅप्पी होली' म्हणत शरीफ अल्पसंख्यांकाना सर्वसमावेशक संदेश दिला.

Commemoration of Veterans Remembrance Day at Panchkula on December 5, 2015 - Brig. Kiran Krishan

The Veterans' Remembrance Day 2015 was commemorated at Panchkula on

Saturday, December 5, 2015, on the occasion of the Vijay Divas, the 44th

Anniversary of the heroic victory of Indian Arms over Pakistan in 1971 under

the aegis of the Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement (IESM), Panchkula Branch. A

lecture was organized for the veterans, and intellectuals of the Tricity

(Mohali-Chandigarh-Panchkula) on the theme "Politics and The British Army"

by Prof. Sir Hew Strachan, FRSE, Hon. D. Univ. of Paisley, currently Prof.

of International Relations at The St Andrews Univ. Scotland, United Kingdom

(U.K.), and author of an acclaimed book "The Politics of the British Army

(1997)". Sir Strachan was awarded the 1998 Westminster Medal for military

literature by the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI).

Prof. Strachan contended that while British Army believes it is apolitical

"if professional interests are at stake, the Army is collectively disposed

to behave politically in defence of those interests and in the furtherance

of the Army's needs." That is not to say that soldiers are identifiable in

terms of political party loyalties. He further stated that if the Army

persists in stating it is apolitical, and acts in accordance with that

belief, then it is in danger of castrating itself. The army must be fully

integrated into the State and must be able to actively and openly debate the

important issues facing it. Sir Hew Strachan's thinking makes conventional

Indian thinking stand on its head where even utterance of the word

"Politics" is an abomination to the defence fraternity. It is remarkable

that Hew Strachan was honoured by the RUSI, an institute supported by the

British Govt. and the military.

The world has moved on. The British military have found a politic way of

navigating the political minefield of its democratic polity. The continuing

OROP agitation by Indian veterans, now over 170 days is a fire bell in the

dead of the night. It is a serious breakdown of political communication

between important organs of the polity. Possibly, the Indian politicians,

more so, the defence brotherhood have to relearn a few tricks from the

British to work the polity without excessive dissonance like the present

gridlock. Change had better be on its way!

About 250 veterans and ladies attended the distinguished lecture and later

shared in the community meal. Local media were present in good numbers.

Indians celebrate 95th Jamia Millia anniversary

RIYADH: The Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association (JMIAA), Riyadh, celebrated the 95th anniversary of the university’s founding at an event here on Thursday night, featuring leading members of the expatriate Indian community.
Famous satirist R.J. Naved, who is a radio jockey, was the star attraction and entertained the audience with his impersonations and humor. He is known for prank calls on radio.
He has played a Haryanavi telephone operator, police constable and given lessons on Zakat, Umrah and fasting on his shows. The appreciative audience was constantly begging for more throughout his live show.
Chief guest Shahid Mahdi, ex-vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, in his address said that there have historically been close ties between Arabs and Indians. He said Al-Buruni wrote Kitab-ul-Hind, the first complete reference book on India.
Mahdi said education was the only way to attain enlightenment and keep away from evil practices in society.
He said various reports have shown that Muslims are lagging behind other communities in terms of development and that a balance was needed between tradition and the modern world.
Earlier, JMIAA president Ghizal Mahdi, in his welcome address, called on people to promote educational movements similar to those in the 1920s during the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation Movement.
The JMIAA’s general-secretary Abid Aqueel and joint secretary Irfan Haque welcomed the guests and presented flowers to them, while vice president Ghiyas Uddin proposed the vote of thanks.
The two guests were presented mementos by the JMIAA while some alumni were honored for rendering extraordinary services in various fields such as sports, and preparing a directory of Jamia alumni living in the Kingdom

Ex-servicemen may skip president's function on September 22

To register their annoyance over the shortcomings in 'one rank one pension' scheme, the ex-servicemen are likely to skip a function to be hosted by President Pranab Mukherjee on September 22 to felicitate the 1965 war heroes.

 

Wing Commander Vinod Nebb (retd.), who is protesting at Jantar Mantar with other veterans, told IANS that he has written a regret letter to the President for not attending the High Tea on Tuesday.

"I am with the protesting ex-servicemen at Jantar Mantar. I echo the voice and sentiments of thousands like me. I expect that the other ex-servicemen would also not join the celebration," he said.

Nebb said the one rank one pension's (OROP) offer, as approved by the central government, had so many riders that they changed the actual spirit of the scheme.

 

In the letter, Nebb said: "I would hope it will give you an opportunity to gauge the morale of ex-servicemen like us, as our supreme commander, and at the very least acknowledge the state of our pride and morale that has steadily been crippled by numerous government and its bureaucratic over the last 40 years."

 

"Our prime minister very categorically made the promise of OROP and whilst he had made some change, it still isn't OROP. And, even that change was not granted willingly, we had to fight for it."

"I look towards you as our Supreme Commander and leader of the armed forces to ask why are you silent? Why would you invite me to an event, which to us, veterans, is a symbolic of our blood, sweat and dignity and play to the government's 'show' of respect to us and our achievement?" he asked.

United Ex-Servicemen Front (UFESM) spokesperson Col. Anil Kaul (retd.) on Thursday appealed to former service chiefs not to participate in 1965 war commemoration functions.

The protesting ex-servicemen, however, are planning programmes to honour war veterans among them and war widows of 1965 India-Pakistan war.

 

As the government announced a scheme for providing OROP, the army veterans said the scheme would not provide one rank one pension (OROP) as it has several discrepancies.

The veterans demanded the base year for the OROP should be financial year 2013-14, in place of 2013 announced by the central government. They want date of implementation to be April 2014, instead of July 2014 as announced by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

 

While veterans want rationalisation of pensions every year, the government has provided for review only every five years.

 

Veterans also want the one-man judicial commission to be replaced with a five-member committee with their representation.

 

Another issue is fixation of pension as per the highest pension for the rank, against the government's announcement of it being average of highest and lowest pensions, with protection to those with higher pension.

When Generals were warm and friendly - Brig SS Virdi

The celebration of the birthday of Rajkumari Shrinagesh, who turned 100 on April 14, reminded me of two incidents associated with her late husband and former Army Chief, Gen S.M. Shrinagesh. In 1956 I was evacuated to the Army base hospital in New Delhi after a serious injury in J&K and was recuperating in the Gen Ward with plaster from hip to toe. The hospital was in temporary barracks and we used to be moved in wheelchairs to the verandah in the afternoons. 

Next to my bed was Nippy Kochhar of the Gurkhas with a leg injury. One day when Nippy had been taken to the washroom block and I was alone in my wheelchair in the verandah, a huge Cadillac passed by. After a while a  suave smartly dressed officer came to  me and asked me where Nippy was  and then waited for him to emerge from the washroom but Nippy seemed to be taking his own  time. After about 15 minutes' wait and chat with me,  he left a packet  of Sohan Halwa for Nippy. When Nippy came out, he told me that the gentleman was Gen Shrinagesh, his brother-in-law, the COAS. During the time he spent with me he was alone, without even his ADC and no one in the hospital knew of his visit. All the while he was talking to me he kept standing and I never felt that I, a 2/Lt, was talking to the COAS. Rank consciousness was totally absent.

It also reminds me of a prior incident in 26 Inf Div in J&K being commanded by the famous Gen Henderson Brooks. He was very fond of Sappers (Engineers) and would hold meetings in our mud-walled, tarpaulin-roofed mess with his commanders like Brig (later Lt Gen) Harbax and Brig Gurbax. I had purchased a new camera from Bombay and was showing off to other officers. One subaltern dared me to call the GOC for a photograph. I accepted the wager and marched in when the conference was in full swing and blurted out, “Sir, will you like to be photographed with the Sapper subalterns?” 

There was a pin-drop silence since I had transgressed all protocol and all the commanders were glaring at me. General Brooks saw my embarrassment. He got up and came to me and said, "Don't worry about them, you are more important. After all both of us wear the same rank on our shoulders (ie one star), then pointing to his shoulder epaulette, he said "I have just this 'gainti-belcha' extra", that is, the sword and baton on a General's epaulette. Gainti and belcha are the two tools used most by us Sappers for digging.

 Things were quite different when the officer fraternity was considered as one bereft of so much rank consciousness like ‘General's Forum/ Club’ today, as if they are a different breed. Manu seems to be slowly making incipient inroads into our psyche once again.

Mrs Shrinagesh’s three brothers were also officers — Gen Kochhar, Brig Bhaloo Kochhar,  both Sappers, and Nippy Kochar of Gurkhas, besides her father Col Kochhar,  a doctor and a contemporary of Gen Srinagesh’s father, who too was a doctor.

अवघ्या महाराष्ट्राचे लाडके दैवत पंढरीच्या पांडुरंगाचे दर्शनासाठी वारकऱ्यांची मांदियाळी आषाढी एकादशीला पंढरपुरी भरते. विविध संतांच्या पालख्या विविध ठिकाणांहून प्रस्थान ठेवतात. 

संतश्रेष्ठ निवृत्तीनाथ महाराजांची पालखी ज्येष्ठ पौर्णिमेला त्र्यंबकेश्वरहून प्रस्थान ठेवते. ह्या वर्षी अधिक आषाढ असल्याने पालखी अधिक आषाढ पौर्णिमेला निघाली. सर्व वारकरी ‘जय जय राम कृष्ण हरि’ आणि ‘ज्ञानोबा तुकाराम’ च्या घोषात, टाळमृदुंगाच्या गजरात पंढरपुराकडे पायी वाटचाल करतात.

 वारी मध्ये विविध गावांच्या दिंड्या असतात. आमची दिंडी कुंदेवाडी (सिन्नर )येथील ह.भ.प. एकनाथ महाराज गोळेसर ह्यांची होती. दिंडीत समाजातील सर्व स्तरातील स्त्री पुरुषांच्या सहभाग असतो. वारीत कोणताही भेदभाव नसतो. ही दिंडी नाशिक, श्रीरामपूर, अहमदनगर, कर्जत, करमाळा, टेंभूर्णी मार्गे २६ दिवसांच्या पायी प्रवासा नंतर पंढरपूरला पोहोचते.

दिंडीच्या मार्गावर रस्त्यांवर विवध गावांतील गावकरी मंडळी वारकऱ्यांची सेवा करतांना दिसतात. चहा, फराळ, अन्नदान तर असतेच, शिवाय वैद्यकीय सेवा देखील पुरविली जाते. ह्या वारकऱ्यांमध्ये जणु  त्यांना विठू माऊलीच दिसत असते.

ह्या प्रवासा दरम्यान प्रत्येक मुक्कामाचं ठिकाण सुनिश्चित असते. मुक्कामाच्या ठिकाणी भजन, कीर्तन होते आणि मग भोजन होते. वारकऱ्यांची राहण्याची सोय राहुट्यांमध्ये होते. वारीत सर्व कामे लष्करी शिस्तीत होतांना दिसतात. प्रत्येक जण आपलं काम वक्तशीरपणे पूर्ण करीत असतो. आणि वारीतील जेवण....काय सांगावे महाराज! न्यारी गोडी असणारे,शुद्ध, सात्विक आणि तृप्त करणारे जेवण! पायी चालून थकलेल्या वारकऱ्यांसाठी हे जेवण म्हणजे आनंदाची पर्वणीच!

गेल्या तीन वर्षांपासून मी पायी दिंडीत जात आहे. मी स्वतःला भाग्यवान समजतो की ह्या वर्षी पण मला वारीत सहभागी होता आले. पंढरपूरला पोहोचल्यावर वारकऱ्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर एक आनंदी भाव बघायला मिळतो. विठू माउलीच्या दर्शनाची ओढ लागलेल्या भक्तांना पांडुरंगाचे दर्शन झाल्यावर अगदी कृतकृत्य झाल्या सारखे वाटते! अशा भक्तीमय वातावरणात महिन्याभराचा थकवा कधी पळून जातो ते समजत देखील नाही!

पंढरपूरची वारी म्हणजे एक साधना आहे, ह्यात भक्ती आहे, अध्यात्म आहे, परमार्थ आहे. वारी केल्यानंतर आपल्यातील दुजाभाव, अहंकार दूर होतो. हरिपाठानंतर वारकरी एकमेकांचे पाया पडतात. थोडक्यात काय तर...“देव पाहण्यासाठी गेला..देव होऊनी आला!”

President to flag off the ‘Run for Unity’ tomorrow at Rashtrapati Bhavan

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will flag off the ‘Run for Unity’ at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan tomorrow (October 31, 2014) at 0815 a.m. to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The residents and staff of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s Body Guard, the Army Guard and the Delhi Police will participate in the Run.

The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) Pledge will be administered by Smt. Omita Paul, Secretary to the President to all staff prior to the Run.
