As pointed out by Mail Today, in BSF the reason for such deaths was due to bad eating habits leading to lifestyle diseases.

Four days after Mail Today highlighted that more soldiers of paramilitary were dying of diseases than by bullets, especially the soldiers of BSF and CRPF, the BSF has decided to take the issue head on.

Border Security Force Director General K K Sharma on Tuesday inaugurated a workshop of doctors and paramedical staff of BSF and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) on mental health and well being. Sharma reiterated what Mail Today highlighted that "recent studies within force indicated that number of deaths of soldiers is increasingly due to illness both physical and mental than due to operational casualties".

As pointed out by Mail Today, in BSF the reason for such deaths was due to bad eating habits leading to lifestyle diseases. Sharma reiterated to his force about taking remedial measures in controlling lifestyle diseases by including yoga, diet changes and in some cases medical consultation. Addressing issues of increasing suicide and fratricide, professor Vimal Kumar Sharma, MD from University of Chester addressed the gathering.

He said, "While the physical health was given due emphasis, the practices of caring for mental health of personnel has been neglected." He emphasised that "it was the duty of the medical staff not just do their job but also to look after security forces". The BSF DG later said issues of suicide and fratricide can be addressed once medical staff in forces are eligible enough to diagnose the symptoms and can elicit the signs of illness. The paramilitary forces or the CAPFs have begun undertaking new measures to keep a check on such issues, especially disease-related deaths in their respective forces.
