Indian defence minister to strengthen Russian ties with first trip to Moscow

New Delhi - India's defence minister, Manohar Parrikar, is to make his first trip to Russia in early November to strengthen bilateral defence co-operation at a time when Moscow is concerned over New Delhi sourcing its materiel requirements from alternative sources
.
Since 2010-11 the United States has overtaken Russia as India's principal defence supplier, having secured USD10 billion worth of tenders, largely for military aircraft and helicopters, and is presently negotiating contracts worth another USD2-3 billion.

This, in turn, has prompted Moscow to open negotiations with India's rival, Pakistan, for the first time, clinching a deal in August to supply it four Mil Mi-35M 'Hind-E' attack helicopters.
