Ex-servicemen kin to get double pension

DEHRADUN: In a move that will affect over 20 lakh dependents of ex-servicemen across the state, the government has decided to provide them double pension.

Dependents of ex-servicemen, like wives and children up to 18 years, currently get family pension after the ex-serviceman's death, from the Centre (Union Ministry of Defence). However, for those servicemen who retire from Army and are absorbed by the state government, pension from the state government would also be provided to their dependents. In this manner, they would get pension from the Centre as well as from the state government.

The decision was announced at a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday, ahead of the four-day assembly session commencing on November 2 at Gairsain in Chamoli district. The government gave a green signal to about 40 proposals relating to change in service norms, creation of more vacancies in forest and other departments, besides setting up development projects and amendment bills.

A senior IAS officer said on condition of anonymity that this is the first such decision affecting dependents of ex-servicemen in the state and that it will cause a heavy financial burden on the state. "We are yet to ascertain the exact amount of financial burden on the state exchequer," he added.

Sources said other proposals which were approved by state cabinet include amendment on the section 5 of the UP Entertainment and revenue inspector Manual-1982.
