OROP Updates - Inderjit Kashyap

Dear Veteran,

The latest update provided will clear many a confusion that some ESM may have had. This morning there was a "TimesView", which was given along with an article on the update on OROP.

Today's Times of India carried an article giving the update on OROP but also published " Times View". The Times View has levelled some very serious allegations against the ESM fraternity & feel that these need to be countered by the Electronic & Print Media with which UFESM has established a very good rapport. If not countered with proper facts the citizenry is likely to sway in its opinion, which currently is definitely towards the agitation of the ESM.
The critical issue raised by TOI are:-
  • (a)    ESM must realise that OROP demand is simply not feasible for any Govt to meet w/o seriously messing up its finances not just  for the present but for all time to come.
  • (b)    If Govt accepts OROP, the sheer scale of pay will run into thousands of crores a yr at present & keep escalating with each passing day. Those demanding such an arrangement are being irresponsible.
  • (c)    Ultimately, this is just not  about Ex-servicemen, govt or parties, it is the taxpayers whose money will be recklessly splurged, if the demands are accepted, & the country's future will be harmed.
  • (d)    We are sure this is the last thing our brave & patriotic soldiers want.

The Times View starts in the same vein as Sub Para (d) above but in the subject part has cleverly & mischievously dubbed OROP  as, unreasonable & which will cause immense harm to the financial health of the nation, now & in the future. Also, the expenses will run into thousands of crores every yr, hence ESM are acting irresponsibly. Finally, our demand of OROP, if acceded to will be splurging of taxpayers money.

What a twist to the complete picture, you have rightly said that this could have planted by those opposed to OROP. However, since TOI is a National newspaper, Times View would have splashed across all its editions in the country. Thus, it is felt that a rejoinder should be an appropriate action from the UFESM unless felt otherwise.

There is another thought for consideration. The UFESM has succeeded in creating a favourable lobby but it is felt that it needs to be built up upon a lot more so as to have a meaningful effect. Those in the know how about Govt's functioning, they are in the civil side, feel that unless the ESM has a large enough lobby to support OROP, hurdles will keep cropping up & delay the acceptance.

With Regards,

Sincerely,
Inderjit Kashyap
