Indian Air Force celebrated its 82nd Air Force Day, on this pride occasion we salute our Air Force personnel for their bravery & commitment.
General Dalbir Singh: “Indian Army must be the Pride of the Nation”
In his address on culmination of the Army Commanders Conference on 18 October 2014, the Chief of Army Staff, Gen Dalbir Singh complemented the Northern & Western Commands on their exemplary response to the flood disaster in Jammu & Kashmir which witnessed spontaneous mobilisation of Army resources, both manpower & equipment, without waiting for any formal requisition. He lauded the selfless commitment of the Indian soldiers involved in the relief & rescue efforts, who never once turned back to look at their posts & families that had suffered equally in the floods.
While addressing the external security concerns he advised the commanders to continuously assess the situation in the sub-continent with respect to the force & security transition taking place and its concomitant effect on the Nation’s security. On the internal security plane, he stressed on the need to maintain relentless pressure in Jammu & Kashmir so that the terrorists could not carry out any meaningful operations to interrupt the forthcoming elections. He also expressed satisfaction on the situation in North East and stressed upon all stakeholders to be made part of the conflict resolution mechanism.
On the modernization front, the COAS informed all of the continued support of the Raksha Mantri and commitment of the MoD towards fulfilling the Army’s requirements. He also exhorted all to streamline and refine in house procedures aimed at preserving and enhancing the life of all service equipment.
The COAS expressed hope that the measures being planned to address the issue of shortage in officer cadre would fructify at the earliest. He also expressed concern on the isolated issues of unethical behaviour and directed zero tolerance towards them.
The COAS asked all to stay committed towards the welfare of the veterans who were the bedrock of the Army and applauded the recent initiatives including the functioning of ECHS. Lastly the COAS stated that even under the most modern methods of war fighting, our Army should not forget that the human dimension would always remain the biggest battle winning factor. Hence the focus must remain on training, equipping & character development of the soldier to ensure that our Army remains a modern, potent & combat ready force.
The Chief culminated his talk with his desire that the ‘Indian Army must remain the pride of the nation’.

18 Oct 1987 : Lt Col Manoranjan Singh, VrC, 4 MAHAR
Lt Col Manoranjan Singh, as part of the IPKF in Sri Lanka, was tasked to capture Kopai North, a citadel of LTTE. On 18 Oct 87, despite stiff resistance and heavy odds against him, Lt Col Singh personally led the attack by his Battalion and after a fierce encounter, captured the LTTE stronghold.
17 Oct 1987 : 2 Lt RS Nagar, VrC (Posthumous), 16 SIKH
2 Lt RS Nagar was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the IPKF. On 17 Oct 87, the battalion was en route to Jafna Fort and came under heavy fire from the LTTE . 2 Lt Nagar took initiative, spotted the heavy machine gun position and went ahead of the column braving all odds. Despite getting injured he charged physically at the gun position and cleared it. He later succumbed to his injuries.
16 Oct 1987 : Maj PS Ganapathy, MVC, 8 MAHAR
Major PS Ganapathy was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the IPKF. On 16 Oct 87 his company was attacked by militants and throughout the day, Major Ganapathy kept fighting gallantly and kept the militants at bay. Despite low on ammunition, Major Ganapathy moved from trench to trench and held his position against heavy odds tenaciously till next day killing many militants.
15 Oct 1948 : Naik Prem Chand, VrC, 2 RAJPUT
On 15 Oct 1948, Naik Prem Chand as part of the assault on Pir Badesar, J&K. He moved with his section through heavy enemy firing and despite being seriously injured rescued his comrades while successfully attacking the feature.
14 Oct 1948 : Jemadar R Thangavelu, VrC, 13 Field Company
On 14 October, 1948, Jemadar R Thangavelu was detailed to open a way for tanks to move on Baltal-Gumri Road, J&K. The enemy carried out heavy firing but with determination and courage, he completed the allotted task and opened the route.
14 Oct 1948 : Sub Raghunath Singh, VrC(Posthumous), 2 PUNJAB
On 14 Oct 48, during advance towards Pir Badesar, J&K, the enemy opened heavy fire on the column. The effectiveness of fire caused the column to be held up. Sub Raghunath Singh led a charge on to the enemy and despite injuries captured the objective. He later succumbed to his injuries.
AFTER 21 YEARS MORTAL REMAINS RECOVERED AT SIACHEN
On 27 Feb 1993, Hav Thukaram Vithoba Patil, 4 MARATHA LI was on a operational patrol in Northern Glacier. During the patrol the individual fell into a crevasse, and was not traceable despite numerous attempts to recover him. On 12 Oct 2014 a patrol of 12 MADRAS recovered the mortal remains of Havildar Thukaram on the Siachen Glacier.

2. Dignified last Rites to Air Veterans You are eligible for Last Rites grants of Rs 7500/- from nearest the Air Force Station (With in municipal limits) for funeral expenses incurred. Along with the information regarding the death of your spouse you need an application and supported by the following documents:-
(a) A Copy of the Death Certificate and Pay Pension Order (PPO) Copy of CSD Card duly attested by a Gazetted Officers/ Sarpanch/Panchayat of the village, as applicable.
(b) For assistance contact Adjutant/SWO/Sadbhavana Cell of the nearest Air Force Station.
3. Please obtain
TWO INK signed copies of the Medical certificate specifying the cause of death from the Hospital or the authorized Medical Practitioner.
One of these is required by the authorities at the cremation/ burial ground.
The other is required by the authorities (Registrar of Deaths & Births) who issues Death Certificates. Obtain cremation/burial certificate from the cremation/burial ground. Listed below are addresses which will be of help to you.

FLOOD RELIEF OPERATIONS BY ARMED FORCES CONTINUE IN FULL SWING IN J&K
The State of Jammu & Kashmir has experienced torrential rains since last one week. Armed Forces are carrying out flood relief and rescue operations in the entire State in heavy rains and extremely bad weather conditions.
130 Army columns have been deployed rescuing more than 14800 people so far. 50 Army Medical Teams have also been deployed in alongwith these columns to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured and sick people. Air Force has deployed 16 Medium Lift Helicopters, 9 Light Helicopters and 7 Transport Aircraft for the rescue and flood relief operations. Six NDRF Teams equipped with boats and other flood relief stores and equipment were airlifted by Air Force from Delhi, Bathinda, Pune and Ahmedabad to Srinagar and Avantipur. An Air Force Rapid Action Medical Team was also flown in from Delhi by a C-17 aircraft for augmenting the medical support in Avantipur. An Army Engineer Task Force was airlifted from Adampur to Srinagar by a C-130J aircraft. Arrangements have been made for airlifting 10,000 blankets and 3000 tents from stores of the Armed Forces at Kanpur to the affected areas. In addition, 85 Tons of medicines provided under the aegis of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Red Cross are being airlifted from Delhi to Jammu and Kashmir by an IL-76 aircraft. In all 30 sorties were flown by Air Force transport aircraft and helicopters today airlifting about 110 Ton load and evacuating more than 160 civilians.
The relief efforts are being coordinated by HQ Northern Command in consultation with the Advance Air HQ in Udhampur. The situation is being reviewed and monitored regularly by the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff at HQ IDS with Army and Air Force Operations Directorates.

IAF CONTINUES WITH FLOOD RELIEF OPERATIONS IN J&K
A total of 1737 personnel & 315.5 metric tonnes of relief material have been airlifted till 1300 hrs on 08 September 2014 by the Indian Air Force (IAF) using Forty Five aircraft flying 186 sorties which include both the Fixed and Rotary wing types. Transport aircraft have been supporting rescue operations operating from Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Jammu, Awantipur and Delhi. Whereas, Helicopters are operating from Srinagar, Awantipur, Udhampur, Jammur, Pathankot and Sarsawa. Relief materials airlifted today to Srinagar, Jammu, Awantipur and other affected areas include blankets, tents, medical supplies, food (MRE - meals ready to eat) and water.
Air Force helicopters with IAF Garud Commandos on board operating in the flood affected areas have so far winched up 321 victims & relocated them to safer areas. In some cases the Garuds had to dismantle the roof and evacuate people trapped in the top floors of their houses. All efforts are being made to evacuate as many people as possible despite the inclement weather and limited resources.
CHAIRMAN COSC & CAS VISITS FLOOD AFFECTED J&K TO OVERSEE RELIEF AND RESCUE OPERATIONS
The Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) and Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha visited the flood affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir, today and carried out aerial recce of both north and south Kashmir.
The Air Chief Marshal took stock of the relief and rescue operations being carried out by the Armed Forces. He was extremely satisfied with the team work and joint operations being carried out by Army, Navy, Air Force and NDRF and trying their best to restore conditions back to normalcy.
During his visit, the Air Chief was received by Air Commodore B Balachandran, Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Air Force Station, Srinagar. The majority of relief operations have been launched and carried out from Air Force Station Srinagar. He then met Lieutenant General Subrata Saha, Commander 15 Corps at Badami Bagh Cantt. He also called on Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Omar Abdullah at Hari Niwas and Hon'ble Governor Shri NN Vohra at Raj Bhawan.
The Air Chief Marshal was extremely happy with all the Air Force stations that pitched in all effort day and night to rescue and provide relief to flood victims. The Air Chief said "that the operations will continue till the time there is a requirement and we are here to help the people, Nation and Government in rescue and relief in time of need." He interacted with the station personnel of Srinagar and Awantipur and said that every air warrior "had done their bit including the support services". It was one of the biggest and challenging helicopter and transport operation carried out in the past one week in one of the most challenging circumstances of difficult terrain, inclement weather, flying at a varying altitude and unprecedented bird activity. He said that an outstanding effort was put in by all personnel of Indian Air Force (IAF) carrying out day and night operations to offload and disperse relief material.
The Air Chief also visited the No. 3 Rapid Air Medical Team (RAMT) and found it well established and equipped Mobile Critical Care Centre for flood victims. He interacted with the Commandos who were involved in these operations and had rescued a number of people.

IAF COMMEMORATES 50 YEARS OF 1965 INDO-PAK WAR
As part of commemoration of 50 years of 1965 Indo-Pak war, the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) & Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha paid homage in remembrance of martyrs of 1965 war who laid down their lives for the country, by laying a wreath at the Air Force War Memorial at Air Force Station Palam. The function was attended by former Chiefs of the Air Staff and Air Veterans in service at that time.
Following the wreathlaying ceremony, the CAS inaugurated the 1965 War Section at the Air Force Museum, where paintings, photographs, squadron war diaries and other artifacts were systematically organized and displayed. Four paintings specific to 1965 war capturing significant air combat situations were commissioned by the IAF to commemorate the historic occasion. These paintings were unveiled by the CAS. The 1965 War section included displays of all aircraft that participated during the war, martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the war and various award winners. The Commanding Officers of the Squadrons who received Battle Honours during the war were also present during the ceremony.
The Indo-Pak conflict of 1965 is a cornerstone in the annals of military history of the Indian subcontinent. IAF personnel were awarded five Maha Vir Chakras and 43 Vir Chakras for exemplary acts of courage during the 1965 war. Air Veterans of yesteryears reminisced about those days, recalling tales of valour, and signed the signature wall of the veterans of the war, which would be displayed in the IAF Museum for posterity marking the historic occasion.
This ceremony was part of the yearlong commemoration marking 50 years of 1965 India-Pakistan war which would culminate on 22 September 2015.
Indian Air Force (IAF) Participates in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
The National-level Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is being conducted in the Indian Air Force with fervour and gusto. Starting from September 25, 2014, Indian Air Force (IAF ) units and establishments all over the country have embarked upon a cleanliness drive in and around the technical and residential areas, inviting enthusiastic participation by the Air Force schools as well as families of Air Warriors. Besides, awareness campaigns on preservation of the environment through cleanliness have also been conducted.
At the local level, officers, airmen and civilians of Air Headquarters were administered the oath by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha in the Air HQs precincts . A declamation contest for all personnel of Air HQs was also conducted today at the Air Force Auditorium at Subroto Park, New Delhi, which was a follow up of the Essay Competition and the Slogan- writing competition that had been conducted earlier on October 01, 2014. The declamation contest brought out some spirited speakers who emphasized on bringing about an attitudinal change towards cleanliness. Prizes were given away for the best essay, best slogan and the best declamation.
